Item Description
Gemini 11 s-66-54706 “First Picture of Australia from Space”
S66-54706 (14 Sept. 1966) --- Western half of Australia, including the coastline from Perth to Port Darwin, looking west, as seen from the Gemini-11 spacecraft during its 26th revolution of Earth. Photograph was made while the spacecraft was at a record-high apogee of 740 nautical miles. Taken with a modified 70mm Hasselblad camera, using Eastman Kodak, Ektachrome, MS (S.O. 368) color film. Once docked with the Agena vehicle, the astronauts used its propulsion system to increase the apogee of their orbit to 850 miles. This was the farthest any human had been away from Earth until the Apollo 8 mission, and was the best view of the full Earth until that mission. The white streak through the sky is original to the photograph, but I am not sure what it is. This is the best Earth photo taken at the time, and rarely available for sale.
This is an original NASA-issued chromogenic photograph, printed on thick fibre-based paper, and watermarked “A Kodak Paper.” There is official NASA red-numbering on the front. Additionally. there are original NASA blue captions on the back. This is the most valuable and desired version of this photo. The photograph is uncirculated.
The photo is in excellent condition, free of concerns.
